Voting - Your Voice, Your Choice

On Thursday, November 1st our Family Night @ the Library focused on the upcoming Presidential Election.

Every four years, during the Presidential Election, Irving ISD students participate in a Mock Election. This district wide initiative began in 2000. Through a four step process, which include research, register, vote, and results, students learn about the voting process, the candidates running, and the responsibility we have as United States citizens to vote. Research links for students and Resource links for teachers are posted online. All students, parents, and faculty and staff members are encouraged to register for the mock election and vote.

I am watching the election returns as I write this blog post. Therefore I can say that for the past 12 years, the students of Irving ISD have successfully selected the President of the United States with their votes.

During our Family Night @ the Library : Voting - Your Voice, Your Choice Event, the students and families were provided information about both of the major candidates, Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama. Campaign coloring pages for both candidates were also provided. The children had the opportunity to create their very own campaign poster with their picture. During the evening the parents were encouraged to talk to their children about the vote, the candidates, and the election as they looked through newspapers locating pictures and words that could be sorted into one of three categories - Red - Republican, Romney; White - Neutral, relates to both candidates or parties; Blue - Democratic, Obama.
